Ella Winter (1898-1980) was an American journalist, writer, and political activist. She was born in England but moved to the United States as a young girl. In the 1920s, she began working as a journalist for leftist publications such as The Daily Worker and The New Masses.
Winter became involved in leftist political activism and was a supporter of the Communist Party, USA. She married a fellow journalist and activist, John Reed, and the two became leading figures in the Communist movement in the United States.
Winter continued to work as a journalist and writer throughout her life, covering events such as the Spanish Civil War and World War II. She also wrote several books, including a memoir about her relationship with John Reed.
Winter was a controversial figure due to her political views and affiliations. She was investigated by the FBI and other government agencies, and her writings and speeches were often censored or suppressed.
